Single-crystal neutron diffraction study was performed for anomalous antiferromagnetic ordering in a heavy-electron superconductor CeNiGe$$_{3}$$. We observed incommensurate magnetic Bragg reflections characterized with the propagation vector of $$k_{2}$$ = (0; 0:41; 1=2) below the N$'e$el temperature of 5 K, while there is no significant magnetic reflection at the commensurate propagation vector of $$k_{1}$$ = (1; 0; 0) at which another magnetic reflection was observed in the previous neutron diffraction study with a polycrystalline sample. From the single crystal study, we suggest that the magnetic phase of CeNiGe$$_{3}$$ at ambient pressure is characterized only by the incommensurate propagation vector $$k_{2}$$.

Journal of the Physical Society of Japan, 75(Suppl.), p.85 - 87, 2006/08

Recently quasi-two-dimensional electron state in rare earth and actinide compounds with HoCoGa$$_5$$-type tetragonal crystal structure was attracted a lot attention in relation to heavy fermion superconductivity observed in CeCoIn$$_5$$, CeIrIn$$_5$$ and PuCoGa$$_5$$. In order to elucidate the role of $$f$$ electron in these compounds, it is necessary to compare their electronic state with that of lanthanum and thorium compounds which do not possess the $$f$$-electrons. The number of valence electrons in the thorium compound is the same as that of the corresponding 4$$f^1$$-itinerant cerium compound. We have recently tried to make thorium 115 compounds by indium flux method and have succeeded in discovering the new material of ThRhIn$$_5$$. Crystal structure and quality were confirmed by X-ray diffraction, fluorescent X-ray analysis and EPMA. The lattice parameters were determined to be 4.681(6) $AA and 7.54(1) AA for $a$$ and $$c$$, respectively. The positional parameter $$z$$ of In(4$$i$$) site was also determined to be $$z=0.3069(1)$$.

We have succeeded in growing a high-quality single crystal of ThIn$$_3$$ with the cubic structure by the In-flux method and measured the de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) effect. Several dHvA branches were observed, ranging from 9.0 $$times$$ 10$$^6$$ to 9.37 $$times$$ 10$$^8$$ Oe. The experimental results are compared to the dHvA results of CeIn$$_3$$ under pressure of 2.7 GPa, together with the results of energy band calculations.

We have succeeded in growing a high-quality single crystal of UCu$$_2$$Si$$_2$$ with the tetragonal structure by the Sn-flux method and measured the electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, magnetization and specific heat. UCu$$_2$$Si$$_2$$ is found to order antiferromagnetically below $$T_{rm N}$$ = 106 K, and follows a successive ferromagnetic ordering at $$T_{rm C}$$ = 100 K. The magnetic properties are highly anisotropic, reflecting the crystal structure. An easy-axis of magnetization is found to be the [001] direction ($$c$$-axis) both in the antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic phases, while the [100] direction ($$a$$-axis) corresponds to the hard-axis in magnetization. The magnetization curve in the antiferromagnetic phase indicates a clear metamagnetic transition at a low field of about 1 kOe and changes smoothly into a ferromagnetic magnetization curve below $$T_{rm C}$$ = 100 K. The saturation moment is determined as 1.75$$mu_{rm B}$$/U at 2 K. The electronic specific heat coefficient is also determined as 20 mJ/K$$^2$$$$cdot$$mol.

A new ternary uranium-based intermetallic compound U$$_3$$Ni$$_5$$Al$$_{19}$$ has been symthesized. It crystallizes in the unique flat orthorhombic structure. Uranium atoms occupy two crystallographic 4$$c$$ and 8$$f$$ sites where local chemical environments are quite similar. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility $$chi(T)$$ demonstrates peculiar magnetic anisotropy; $$chi(T)$$ along $$b$$- and $$c$$-axes obeys the Curie-Weiss law above 23 K, while $$chi(T)$$ along $$a$$-axis is small and temperature independent. At 23 K, only $$chi_c$$ shows a sharp cusp corresponding to the antiferromagnetic ordering, while $$chi_b$$ remains paramagnetic behavior down to 2 K. These results and crystallographical considerations lead to a conclusion that only uranium atoms at the 8$$c$$ site order antiferromagnetically at $$T_{rm N}$$ = 23 K, while uranium atoms at the $$4c$$ site do not order down to 50 mK.

Electrical resistivity, specific heat, magnetic susceptibility and high-field magnetization measurements have been performed on the ferromagnet UFe$$_{4}$$P$$_{12}$$ with the cubic crystal structure. The ferromagnetic ordering at $$T_{rm C}$$,=,3.1 K, a small saturation moment of 1.3 $$mu_{rm B}$$/U, together with the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility, are found to be well explained by considering the 5$$f^2$$ crystalline electric field schemes for $$T_{h}$$ site symmetry and the magnetic exchange interaction.

We evaluated the neutron-$$gamma$$-rays discrimination of the neutron detector comprising a superconducting tunnel junction (STJ) on the single crystal of Li$$_{2}$$B$$_{4}$$O$$_{7}$$. The neutron detector was irradiated with X-rays, $$gamma$$-rays and neutrons, and the signal pulses were analyzed including pulse height distributions and rise times. It was found that the most of the signal pulses for the neutron-events exhibited slower rise times than those for X-rays and $$gamma$$-rays. This indicated the capability of neutron-$$gamma$$-rays discrimination of the detector using the differences in the decay time of the signal current.

The structure of a rubredoxin (Rd) from ${it Pyrococcus furiosus}$, an organism that grows optimally at 100 $$^{circ}$$C, was determined using the neutron single-crystal diffractometer for biological macromolecules (BIX-3) at the JRR-3 reactor of JAERI. Data were collected at room temperature up to a resolution of 1.5 ${AA}$, and the completeness of the data set was 81.9 %. The model contains 306 H atoms and 50 D atoms. A total of 37 hydration water molecules were identified. The model has been refined to final agreement factors of ${it R}$ = 18.6 % and ${it R}$$$_{free}$$ = 21.7 %. Several orientations of the O-D bonds of side chains, whose assignments from X-ray data were previously ambiguous, were clearly visible in the neutron structure. While most backbone N-H bonds had undergone some degree of H/D exchange throughout the molecule, five H atom positions still had distinctly negative (H) peaks. The neutron Fourier maps clearly showed the details of an extensive set of H bonds involving the ND$$_{3}$$$$^{+}$$ terminus that may contribute to the unusual thermostability of this molecule.

Neutron diffractometer for biological macromolecule crystallography

Kurihara, Kazuo; Tanaka, Ichiro*; Niimura, Nobuo

Nihon Kessho Gakkai-Shi, 46(3), p.193 - 200, 2004/05

Neutron diffraction provides an experimental method of directly locating hydrogen atoms in proteins and nucleic acids, and the development of the neutron imaging plate (NIP) became a breakthrough event in neutron protein crystallography. A high-resolution neutron diffractometers dedicated to biological macromolecules (BIX-3, BIX-4) with the NIP have been constructed at Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute. The detailed structure of the diffractometer and the systematic procedure of the neutron diffraction experiment from the crystallization of a large single crystal to the data collection and the data processing, and the future prospect of the neutron diffractometry in proteins will be presented.

Single crystal growth and magnetic properties of ferromagnetic URhGe$$_2$$

Matsuda, Tatsuma; Haga, Yoshinori; Tokiwa, Yoshifumi; Andrei, G.; Yamamoto, Etsuji; Okubo, Tomoyuki*; Onuki, Yoshichika

Acta Physica Polonica B, 34(2), p.1071 - 1074, 2003/02

We have successfully grown a single crystal of uranium intermetallic compound URhGe$$_2$$. The temperature dependence of electrical resistivity shows highly anisotropic behavior. Two anomalies, which correspond to the magnetic ordering temperatures, were observed in the resistivity, magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements at $$T_{rm M1}$$= 30 K and $$T_{rm M2}$$=25 K. The magnetic susceptibility also shows a large uniaxial anisotropy with a magnetic easy-axis along the [010] direction.

Applications of beam technology to material industry

Hanada, Masaya

Purazuma, Kaku Yugo Gakkai-Shi, 78(6), p.541 - 547, 2002/06

The beam technology developed for neutral beam injection in fusion application has been applied to industry. Presently, positive ion beams are widely applied to process the semiconductor. For example, an intense argon ion beam is used for milling substrates of the semiconductor, and a large liquid crystal is also manufactured by implanting P+ or B+ ions on glass plates. Recently, the intense negative ion beam has also been developed and is being applied to new field in semiconductor industry. Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI) is developing new technology for slicing the thin single-crystal semiconductor plates of several tens of micrometers in thickness from the ingot without waste by implanting the MeV-class H$$^{-}$$ ion beam developed for ITER. This process is realized only by using the high-energy negative ion beam since the positive ion implantation requires the mass separation that practically limits the ion beam energy, namely, penetration depth of the ions. By implanting 725 keV H$$^{-}$$ ions directly onto the Si ingot, the single-crystal Si plates of 10 mm in thickness have successfully been sliced. It is expected that this technology opens mass productions of high efficiency solar cells and micro-machines.
